The aim of this lab is rooted in Pierre Janet's scientific and clinical approach to the unconscious—not Freudian psychoanalysis. We are correcting an oversight made by the Surrealists themselves, who mistakenly believed they were Freudian.
Freud's approach is devoid of Theory of Mind—abandoning any genuine understanding of how patients think, what they believe, or their actual life circumstances in favor of a paranoid model that reduces all behavior to hidden symbolic meanings and repressed desires. This approach lacks situational awareness of the person as an agent with beliefs, intentions, and contexts. Janet, by contrast, studied dissociation, automatism, and consciousness through rigorous clinical methodology that preserved both empirical rigor and respect for the patient's actual mental life.
This distinction matters: Janet's framework emphasized direct observation and scientific rigor—the same principles that should have animated the original Surrealist movement. This lab continues that rigorous, scientific engagement with the surreal.
